The New York State Senate has approved AB 7594, a bill that prevents the sale of playground surfacing materials that contain intentionally-added PFAS, PAHs, and lead.
This legislation, developed with input from leading manufacturers of recycled rubber, will help give people in New York confidence that the surfaces in their communities are safe and sustainable.
"New York's passage of AB 7594 is a meaningful step toward ensuring that every community has access to safe, high-quality play spaces,” Scott Gerber, the Program Director of the Better Play Initiative, said. “This legislation reflects a shared commitment to both community health and the inclusive, year-round play that recycled rubber surfaces make possible."
The legislation codifies current practice by keeping intentionally-added PFAS out of these surfaces.
Recycled rubber keeps communities active year-round and provides children of all ages with the opportunity to play. An extensive body of scientific research, including a comprehensive study from California, supports the material’s safety.
Safe playing surfaces are essential for communities, and we think passage of this legislation supports that goal.
